The 2015 Yates Cup Champion Scholarship commemorates one of the most defining moments in Gryphon Football history—our victory over Western to capture the Yates Cup under Head Coach Stu Lang. This scholarship honours the relentless dedication, leadership, and excellence demonstrated by the championship team, inspiring future Gryphon athletes to strive for greatness on and off the field. Awarded to a student-athlete who embodies the perseverance, discipline, and championship mindset that defined the 2015 team, this scholarship ensures that the legacy of that historic season continues to shape the future of Gryphon Football.
Bob & Joyce Brooks Football Endowment

The Bob & Joyce Brooks Football Endowment honours the enduring legacy of Bob and Joyce Brooks, whose passion and commitment helped shape the Gryphon Football program. A co-captain of the 1949 and 1950 teams and a Dominion Championship winner in 1948, Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame Builder (2004), Bob Brooks (B.Sc. 1951) was a true leader on and off the field. His dedication to reconnecting alumni and building the Football Endowment Fund played a pivotal role in the success of what is now the Friends of Gryphon Football.
Joyce shared Bob’s passion for Gryphon Football, making this endowment a testament to their lifelong support and belief in the program’s future. This scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who exemplify leadership, dedication, and athletic excellence, ensuring that the values Bob and Joyce championed continue to inspire generations of Gryphon athletes.
Dick Brown Scholarship

The Dick Brown Scholarship honours the unwavering leadership, dedication, and impact of Dick Brown, who served as Gryphon Football Head Coach from 1970 to 1978 and left an enduring mark on Gryphon Athletics. A Hall of Fame Builder (1988), Brown was a driving force for over 20 years, shaping the program with pride, determination, and strength of character.
Through the generosity and vision of Dr. Patrick Lett, a Gryphon Football Letterman and All-Star, this scholarship recognizes student-athletes who exemplify exceptional athletic and leadership qualities, reflecting the values and competitive spirit that defined Brown’s tenure.
As a builder of champions, Brown produced 12 All-Canadians, contributed to multiple national championship teams, and was a member of the All-Hamilton Tiger-Cats Team of the Decade. His influence extended beyond the gridiron, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of Gryphon Football players.
Don Taylor Football Scholarship Fund

Dr. Robert Silk Scholarship

The establishment and growth of this endowment have been significantly championed by former Gryphon Wildman Trophy recipients Dr. Robbie Keith '59 and Dr. Dave Hume '61, along with their teammates. Their dedication has been instrumental in fostering a legacy of support for future generations of Gryphon athletes.

George A. Gray OAC ’51 Varsity Scholarship

Peter Johnson Appreciation Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through the generosity of Bill Morrison, who helped initiate and fund this tribute to his close friend. Peter Partridge Jr. Family Scholarship Fund

Redmen Scholarship Endowment

The Redmen Scholarship Endowment was established by Mr. Roy Pearn, with the generous support of 1961-1964 Redmen Football alumni and friends, to honour the enduring legacy of the OAC Redmen football team. Founded in the late 19th century at the Ontario Agricultural College, the Redmen played a foundational role in shaping what is now University of Guelph Gryphon Football.
This scholarship recognizes student-athletes who exemplify resilience, sportsmanship, and dedication to teamwork—the same values that defined the Redmen era. By supporting the next generation of Gryphon Football players, this endowment ensures that the rich history and traditions of the OAC Redmen continue to inspire and impact the program for years to come.
Rick Kohler 1984 Vanier Cup Scholarship

The Rick Kohler 1984 Vanier Cup Scholarship honours the legacy and memory of Rick Kohler, a pivotal member of the 1984 Gryphon Football team, a team that secured the university's first national championship. Initially joining the Gryphons in 1983 as a running back, Rick transitioned to the tight end position where he made significant contributions, including scoring two touchdowns in the 31-26 Yates Cup victory over the Western Mustangs. Throughout his tenure, Rick participated in three Yates Cup finals (1984, 1986, 1987) and was recognized as an OUAA First Team All-Star in 1987.
Established by the Kohler family, along with Rick’s teammates and friends, this scholarship supports student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athletic ability, leadership, and a never-quit attitude.
Steckle Family Football Scholarship

The Steckle Family Football Scholarship was established by Olympian Bob Steckle ’52 and his wife, Kay, to support Gryphon Football student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athleticism and leadership. A standout football player at the Ontario Agricultural College, Bob won the Wildman Trophy in 1951, recognizing his excellence in leadership, athletics, and academics.
Beyond football, Bob was a three-time Olympian in wrestling (1952, 1956, 1960) and made history as Canada’s flag bearer at the 1956 Olympics. His dedication and perseverance earned him induction into the Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.
Through this scholarship, the Steckle family’s legacy continues to inspire and support future generations of Gryphon Football players.
Tom Mooney Scholarship

The Tom Mooney Scholarship honours Tom Mooney, a legendary Gryphon coach who led the football, basketball, and wrestling teams to multiple championships in the 1950s and 1960s. Arriving at Ontario Agricultural College in 1956, he transformed the football program, capturing two league titles and compiling a 26-17 record as head coach. He also led the basketball team to a provincial championship (1958-59) and guided the wrestling team to a second-place finish (1957-58).
Recognized for his influence and leadership, he was inducted into the Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. This scholarship supports student-athletes who exemplify athleticism, leadership, and perseverance, ensuring Coach Mooney’s lasting impact on Gryphon Athletics.
Tricar Group Scholarship

The Tricar Group Scholarship was established through the generosity of Tricar Group, a leading developer of multi-family high-rise buildings in Southwestern Ontario. Initiated by Adam Carapella, a Gryphon Football alumnus and 2005 Wildman Trophy recipient, this scholarship supports current or entering Gryphon Football student-athletes, with preference given to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program.
Tricar’s commitment to excellence and community development aligns with the values of Gryphon Football, ensuring continued support for the next generation of student-athletes and future business leaders.
William P. Weber Football Endowment

The William P. Weber Football Endowment honours Dr. William "Bill" P. Weber, a legendary Gryphon quarterback who led the team to OQAA titles in 1955 and 1958. Known for his leadership, intensity, and athletic excellence, he was a pivotal figure in Gryphon Football history.
Beyond the field, Dr. Weber was an Athletic Council leader and later served as Vice-President and Chairman. His contributions were recognized with his induction into the Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Established through his generosity, this endowment supports entering student-athletes on the Men’s Football team, ensuring his legacy of excellence and leadership continues to inspire future Gryphon athletes.
1996 Yates Cup Scholarship

The 1996 Yates Cup Scholarship was established by members of the 1996 Gryphon Football team, who captured the Yates Cup under the leadership of Head Coach Dan McNally. In one of the program’s most memorable championship runs, the Gryphons secured the title with a 23-13 victory over the Waterloo Warriors, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and unwavering determination.
This scholarship was initiated by teammates Ian McQueen and Bill Brown, whose passion for Gryphon Football and commitment to giving back inspired their fellow teammates to contribute. The 1996 team remains a constant supporter of the program, ensuring that future generations of Gryphon student-athletes receive the same opportunities to excel in both academics and athletics.
This award recognizes student-athletes who embody exceptional athleticism, leadership, and the championship spirit that defined the 1996 Yates Cup-winning team.
Brian Cluff Excellence Scholarship

The Brian Cluff Excellence Scholarship honours Brian Cluff, a Gryphon Football alumnus whose 40+ year association with the program as a player, coach, and mentor has left a lasting legacy. Known as the consummate Gryphon, his dedication and leadership continue to shape the team. This award supports current student-athletes, with preference given to defensive linemen who embody his grit, passion, and commitment.
A standout defensive end (1982-1986), Brian was a key part of the 1984 Vanier Cup-winning team before being drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1986. He transitioned into coaching, contributing to Yates Cup victories in 1992, 1996, and 2015. Recognized for his excellence, he was named OUA and CIS "Assistant Coach of the Year" (2011) and received the Dr. John T. Powell Award for his commitment to Gryphon Athletics.
Funded by teammates, coaches, and players he has mentored, this scholarship ensures that Brian’s legacy of leadership, dedication, and excellence continues to inspire future generations of Gryphon student-athletes.
Friends of Gryphon Football Scholarship Endowment

Dan Cornwell and Megan Vankerrebroeck Football Scholarship

Established by Gryphon Football alumnus Dan Cornwell and his wife, Megan Vankerrebroeck, this scholarship supports a student-athlete on the varsity football team and honours the lifelong bond between players and the program. A team captain in 1974 and Wildman Trophy recipient, Dan exemplified sportsmanship, leadership, and excellence both on and off the field. Dedicated long-time supporters of Gryphon Football, Dan and Megan have contributed to key facility upgrades and other scholarships, reinforcing their commitment to the program’s future.
Preference for this award is given to student-athletes who demonstrate financial need, first to those entering or registered in any Ontario Agricultural College program, followed by those in any BSc program, and finally to any student-athlete in financial need. Through this scholarship, Dan and Megan’s commitment to Gryphon Football continues to support and inspire future generations of student-athletes.
Padelford Family Football Scholarship

The Padelford Family Football Scholarship was established by Loren Padelford ’04, a Gryphon Football alumnus and member of the 1996 Yates Cup Championship team, along with his family, to support the next generation of leaders within the Gryphon Football program. This scholarship recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athletic and leadership qualities, embodying the core values of excellence, dedication, and teamwork.
Through this scholarship, the Padelford family’s commitment to Gryphon Football ensures that future generations of student-athletes have the support and resources needed to excel on and off the field.
1992 Yates Cup Champions Scholarship (emerging scholarship)

The 1992 Yates Cup Football Scholarship honours the grit, determination, and championship spirit of the Guelph Gryphons’ 1992 team, which captured the program’s second Yates Cup. Despite a 4-3 regular-season record, the Gryphons battled through the playoffs with resilience and tenacity, proving their championship pedigree.
In the Yates Cup final at Toronto’s SkyDome, Guelph delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Western Mustangs 45-10 to claim the conference title. Their relentless defense and explosive offense defined their playoff run and secured their place in Gryphon history.
This scholarship supports Gryphon Football student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athletic ability, leadership, and perseverance, reflecting the legacy of the 1992 championship team. Through this award, their unwavering commitment to success continues to inspire future generations of Gryphons.
Tavius Robinson Family Football Scholarship

The Tavius Robinson Family Football Scholarship honours Tavius Robinson, a standout athlete whose journey from Guelph Collegiate to the University of Guelph exemplifies determination, adaptability, and excellence. Beginning his collegiate career with the Gryphons, Tavius faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted U SPORTS competition. Undeterred, he set his sights on new goals, transferring to Ole Miss, where he thrived as a dominant defensive force. His relentless pursuit of success led him to the NFL, where he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.
This scholarship supports Gryphon Football student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athletic ability, leadership, and resilience, reflecting Tavius’ journey of perseverance and ambition. Through this award, his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of Gryphons to chase their dreams on and off the field.
Annual Expendable Scholarships
Annual expendable scholarships play a vital role in supporting Gryphon Football student-athletes, providing immediate financial assistance to help them excel both on and off the field. Unlike endowed scholarships, which are funded in perpetuity, expendable scholarships rely on annual donations to directly impact student-athletes each year.
Donors who commit to a minimum of $1,000 per year for at least five years can establish a named expendable scholarship, creating an opportunity to recognize leadership, athletic excellence, and dedication within the Gryphon Football program.
